It was certainly a shock to the book industry when Borders Group decided to shutter one-third of their stores including several in the Pittsburgh area. Everyone lost in the deal. Publishers are owed million of dollars, consumers have fewer bricks and mortar stores to buy books at and it is never a good thing for businesses to close as jobs are lost and the local economy suffers.
The most important thing to remember in the death of some stores is that it does not predict the death of all. Borders' business model is completely different from the independent bookstore model. Being able to "buy local" from a business that contributes to the local economy in many different ways only benefits all of us. The sheer number of books out there can be overwhelming; it's comforting and necessary to have a book expert at your local store who can help you find the book YOU want to read, not the book all the chains are pushing that week or the book that Amazon's mystical logarithm thinks you want. And you know knowing beats browsing the shelves of a funky, unique bookstore like Journeys.
Journeys of Life is dedicated to being here as a center for our spiritual community and to provide memorable gifts, exceptional services, and message of universal spirituality the world so badly needs.
