Journeys of Life
May 2009 JourneyNotes

From Jean......at Journeys

"A wedding anniversary is the celebration of love, trust, partnership, tolerance and tenacity.  The order varies for any given year."

I was looking for a quote about marriage online and found this by Paul Sweeney.  I couldn't find out who Paul Sweeny is(was) but I really like the quote.  This was probably the most important weekend of my like - 33 year ago.  There were endless parties leading up to May 8th 1976 , the day when Hal and I were married.  It was a grand celebration complete with what seemed like a parade of bridesmaids, magnificent music with actual trumpets and loads of friends.  We were starry eyed and had no idea what we were in for!

I can't even begin to recount the situations that taught me tolerance.  Anyone who has a relationship with a significant other knows what I mean.  I am thankful that Hal knows what it means to be tenacious and has stuck by me through the good, the bad, and the ugly all these years.  Most of all I am grateful to have had all the opportunities to learn what it means to be in a partnership.  Being married to Hal isn't what I thought it would be but it sure has been everything I ever wanted for my life - and so much more.

If happiness is not having what you want but wanting what you have .... then I am doubly happy because being married to Hal I have both.  I wish you all love and happiness.

Mother's Day - May 10th

Most people mistakenly believe that Mother’s Day is an invention of the greeting card makers and flower shops - a cynical ploy to make the nation spend millions of dollars each year on cards and flowers. However, the roots of the holiday are more elevated than this and go back much further, right back to the times of the ancient Greeks and Romans.

Historians believe that the earliest celebration of Mother’s Day was the ancient springtime festivals in Greece and Rome, dedicated to the mother goddesses, Rhea and Cybele.  In England “Mothering Sunday”, similar to Mother’s Day is observed on the fourth Sunday in Lent. It is believed that the early church adapted the ancient celebrations, to venerate the Mother of Christ, Mary.

It is Anna M. Jarvis of Philadelphia who is credited with being the inventor of modern Mother’s Day in the USA. Her mother used to hold an annual gathering called “Mother’s Friendship Day” that was intended to celebrate peace and to heal the pain of the Civil War. After her mother died in 1905, Anna campaigned for the establishment of an official Mother’s Day to commemorate her mother’s work.

In 1908 the first Mother’s Day celebration was held at the West Virginia Church, where the elder Jarvis had been a Sunday School teacher for over 20 years. Each mother and child present wore white carnations to symbolize the sweetness, purity and endurance of a mothers love. Over time, red carnations became the symbol of a living mother, with white carnations signifying that one’s mother has died.

In 1914, President Woodrow signed a bill recognizing Mother’s Day as a National Holiday to be celebrated each year on the second Sunday in May. Anna Jarvis had envisioned Mother’s Day as a religious holiday, to be observed by attending Church, but it became more and more commercialized with the sending of cards, gifts and flowers instead. It is said that before she died in 1948 she confessed that she regretted having started the Mother’s Day tradition. Ironically, she remained childless, but each Mother’s Day she would receive thousands of cards.

The second Sunday of May is one of the most popular day of the year in the USA to dine out, and telephone lines are at their busiest. Don't forget to celebrate Mom this Sunday.  Journeys of Life has a wide array of gifts for the Moms and Grandmas in your life including new whimsical mugs and water bottles from Curly Girl,  Blessings Bowls, Wind Chimes, Candles, and of course great gemstone and silver jewelry.

If you were born in May then this gorgeous green stone will bring luck when worn. Emeralds were used as amulets to ward off epilepsy in children and thought to cure diseases of the eye. Said to bring serenity and peace of mind, they are thought to improve memory, intelligence, and enhance psychic abilities. This stone ensures physical, emotional, and mental equilibrium. It eliminates negativity and brings in positive actions. They are also worn to enhance love and contentment.  An alternate birthstone for May is Chrysoprase, said to increase fertility and compassion, soothe heartache and loneliness, promote emotional balance, inner peace and reduce depression.

Flower: Lily of the Valley
May birth flower is the lily of the valley. The lily of the valley represents humility, chastity, sweetness, purity and return to happiness. According to legend, the lily of the valley came into being from Eve's tears after she was kicked out of the Garden of Eden.
