Journeys of Life

From Jean at Journeys........

My birthday is  March 18th.  Yes, I am a Picses and I am turning 60.  There I said it! In fact I celebrate it. Many women I know would never tell the world their age but I look at turning 60 differently.  Let me tell you why.

When I was 15 I could hardly wait to be 16 so I could drive.  When I was 20 I could hardly wait to be 21 and be 'legal'.  Turning 30 brought a fun party.  At 40 I was dealing with kids who wanted to be teenagers.  At 50 I was dealing with teenagers who were goin on 25!  At 60 I celebrate life and am grateful that I have survived!

I attribute this acceptance of turning 60 to having had older women around me most of my life who have taught me through example that life doesn't end at .... you fill in the blank.  There was Portia who taught me you can have a family of choice; Rebecca  who taught me that everyone is special;  Louise taught me about loyalty and the importance of hard work;  Mary showed me that I will never be too old to pass on my wisdom; and Eleanor shows me to follow my passion, no matter how old I am or where it takes me. Who are the people in your life that have given you your legacy?

I was sent a wonderful book, Opening the Kimono, by the author to consider selling at Journeys. Theresa Rose has penned an amazing series of short stories about her journey through life's biggest challenges.  Now, I always have a stack of books on my desk to look at and this one kept calling my name.  I avoided it for weeks.  Now I am glad I listened! It is a diary, rant, confession and healing guide all rolled into one.  I highly recommend this book if you want to uncover the many gifts that lie within you, some of which may be buried deep inside. You can find it upstairs at Journeys.

I can honestly say that I am OK with where I am today.  I have an amazing husband of 32 years, two grown children who are making their individual mark on the world and a hoard of friends without whom I would be lost. Sure I could do without the extra pounds I have accumulated along the way or the aches and pains that seem to come with the territory.  But ultimately I am grateful.  Grateful that I have been allowed to walk this earth for 60 years so far, grateful to have everything I really need in life and a lot of what I want, grateful to love and be loved.  And grateful for all the wonderful people who have enriched my life through Journeys. Thank you all for traveling with me.

March Signs and Symbols

Astrological Signs
Pisces - The Fish - Feb 19 - Mar 20
Taurus - The Bull - Mar 21 - Apr 20

Birthstone - Aquamarine
It is no coincidence that  Aquamarine (aqua - water; mare - sea) is the stone for this water sign month.  According to legend, aquamarine was found in the treasure chests of mermaids, and thought to be a lucky stone for sailors and travelers.   It is the stone of courage and serenity.  It is said to accelerate the intellectual reasoning process and enhances knowledge.  Aquamarine gives the strength you need to take responsibility for yourself and keep you on a persistent path towards your goals, helping to guarantee success.  It stimulates and activates the throat chakra making it a good stone for communication.  It can prmote soothing and calm while also promoting confidence.  Be sure to have aquamarine in your pocket when you travel or take a cruise.   Bloodstone is considered an alternate March stone.

Flower: Daffodils
The birthday flower for March is the Daffodil or Jonquil.   In the language of flowers they symbolize chivalry, respect, modesty and faithfulness.  The daffodil is a dependable spring flower, one of the earliest to bloom and brings with it hope.

A Brief Explanation of the Moon Phases

The lunar month is the 29.53 days it takes to go from one new moon to the next. The phases of the moon are caused by the relative positions of the earth, sun, and moon.

At new moon, we see the side of the Moon that is not being lit by the Sun (in other words, we see no Moon at all!) As the Moon moves eastward, we see a bit more of the sunlit side of the Moon each night. A few days after new moon, we see a thin crescent in the western evening sky. The waxing crescent Moon appears to grow fatter, each night. When half of the Moon's disc is illuminated, we call it the first quarter moon. This name comes from the fact that the Moon is now one-quarter of the way through the lunar month. The Moon continues to wax.

Once more than half of the disc is illuminated, it has a shape we call gibbous. The gibbous moon appears to grow fatter each night until we see the full sunlit face of the Moon. We call this phase the full moon. The Moon has now completed one half of the lunar month.

During the second half of the lunar month, the Moon grows thinner each night. We call this waning. Its shape is still gibbous at this point, but grows a little thinner each night. As it reaches the three-quarter point in its month, the last quarter Moon again shows us only one side of the disc illuminated. As it completes its journey and approaches new moon again, the Moon is a waning crescent.
