Journeys of Life

From Jean ..... at Journeys

The transformation has begun.  Last week we spent our time dusting, restocking, and rearranging displays in preparation for the holiday shopping season.  We spent the entire day today turning our window in to a magical winter wonderland.  You know what a traditional girl I am.  For 21 years I have waited until these few days before Thanksgiving to decorate for the holidays.  I will not go directly from Halloween to Christmas.  I just won't do it.  Perhaps it is my Episcopal heritage of celebrating Advent - the 4 weeks leading up to Christmas - that gives me this strong conviction.  Even more so is my desire to celebrate Thanksgiving, a bittersweet day for me personally.

My father always arrived from Boston on Thanksgiving eve with a box of live lobsters in tow.  It seemed rather gluttonous to indulge in such an extravagant meal knowing what was to come the next day.  But it was my dad's way of bringing a little piece of 'home' to Pittsburgh.  How appropriate that my father died on Thanksgiving Day  29 years ago - a holiday that was so very special to both of us.  It changed the day for many years.  Now I am able to smile as I remember the memories of all the wonderful Thanksgivings we did have together.  Please hug the people you love this week.  You never know when it is the last time you can do that.

There are lots of things happening this holiday season at Journeys.  I will be sending newsletters more often announcing the weekly promotions and new merchandise arrivals. Free parking is now available on weekends at Liberty School, a short two blocks from Walnut Street.  Our extended holiday hours begin Friday, December 3rd with the Holiday Walk on Walnut.  It is a busy time!

I hope you plan to make Journeys a part of your holiday shopping plan.  When I look back on all the holidays we have been through at the store, I am amazed.   My heart is full of gratitude for each and every one of you.  Thank you for your loyalty, for making Journeys a shopping destination.  With out our wonderful customers, Journeys would not exist.  I am truly grateful.

GRATITUDE

We have so much to be grateful for, don't we -  family, friends, a warm home, food on the table, a winter coat, the ability to earn a living, the freedom to worship as and whom we choose, perseverence to go on -  the list is endless.  I love this poem because it says all the things I need to be reminded of on a regular basis to help me maintain an attitude of gratitude and a thankful heart.

Be Thankful

Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire.

If you did, what would there be to look forward to?

Be thankful when you don’t know something. For it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times. During those times you grow.

Be thankful for your limitations. Because they give you opportunities for improvement.

Be thankful for each new challenge.  Because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes. They will teach you valuable lessons.

Be thankful when you’re tired and weary. Because it means you’ve made a difference.

It is easy to be thankful for the good things. A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks.

GRATITUDE can turn a negative into a positive.  Find a way to be thankful for your troubles and they can become your blessings.
