From Jean ...... at Journeys
Here we are for yet another new year. Hard to believe, isn't it? I was fortunate to be able to spend a few days at the farm over New Years. I used to ake resolutions and remember always being disappointed because I could not keep them. As I have grown older I realize that it is much more productive for me to contemplate how I want this year to be different from last year. It was a snowy few days at the beginning of 2010. I sat and watched the birds gather at the feeder while having morning coffee. I caught up on some reading, read a lot of email, and even took a few naps. I guess if I had to say one thing that I want to be different this year is for me to "take time". Take time to appreciate the little things in life, time to absorb the big things and time to just BE. I can get so caught up in things I think I need to do that I miss the time to do the things I want to do. That is what I would lke to be different in 2010. What would you want to be different in your life this year?
THis is the longest JourneyNotes I have done electronically. So be patient as you read on. There are lots of events and worshops being offered in January. Perhaps one of the things you want to do this year is take a class or have an intuitive session. Cyndi Dale, author, clairvoyant, teacher and healer, will be at Journeys mid month. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from one of the best! I am excited about all we have going on at Journeys. I hope you are too!
I leave for Atlanta tomorrow for the largest Gift Show in the country. It is exhausting and exhilerating at the same time. I get to see all that is new for 2010 and bring some of it back to Journeys for you. I will let you know about all the treasures I find and when they will be arriving in Pittsburgh. Until then, we have a great selection of books and gifts on hand. Please remember Journeys when you need that special gift for a friend or yourself. And if you cannot get to Journeys, please shop local! Your future choices in retail depends on it!
Happy 2010 to all!
January Signs and Symbols
Astrological Signs Capricorn - The Goat - Dec 22 - Jan 20 Aquarius - Water Bearer - Jan 21 - Feb 19
Birthstone - Garnet Garnet, from the Latin word for pomegranate, is known as the stone of health, ridding the body of negative energies. It has also been known as a stone of commitment - to purpose, to others, to oneself. The loving power of garnet tends to reflect the attributes of devotion, bringing the love of others to expressions of warmth and understanding. It both monitors and adjusts the flow of energy, providing for a balanced energy field around the physical body and aligning the emotional and intellectual bodies with the perfection of All that is. Garnets are typically a deep red color. However, there are less common green, rose and purple garnets.
Flower: Carnation The birthday flower for January is the carnation. Carnations have been traditionally associated with fascination, which is a fitting sentiment for the freshness of the new year.

| Smudge & Smoke
January is the perfect time to clear out old energy, set new goals and intentions and buildup protection for you home, your family and your workplace. Smudging is one way to create a clear, positive environment.
The ritual of smudging can be defined as "spiritual house cleaning." In theory, the smoke from various herbs and plants attaches itself to negative energy and as the smoke clears it takes the negative energy with it, releasing it into another space where it will be regenerated into positive energy.
You will find several different kinds of smudge at Journeys. There are primarily four herb choices for smudging: sage, sweet-grass, cedar, and tobacco. They can be used alone, or bundled together in any combination. This bundle is what we refer to as a smudge stick or smudge bundle. Sage is the most sacred of the herbs, the most commonly used, and is burned primarily for protection. Sweet-grass is used to dispel negative energy. Cedar is used mainly for purifying and also to introduce positive energy. Herbal Tobacco helps to carry the smoke, with your intentions, to the Heavens. It is also considered an offering.
Smudging is a simple, fast, cost-effective way to cleanse yourself and create sacred space. Smudge yourself when your spirits are low, after you have been around someone who is sick or depressed, during meditation and when in prayer. You can also smudge your surroundings to cleanse the energy, clear a new home, or to just begin anew!
Self cleansing is simple. Simply light the end of the smudge stick or loose herbs in a shell or bowl and extinguish the flame once the herbs have started smoldering. Allow the smudge stick to smolder, freeing the smoke to circle in the air. Fan the swirls of smoke around your body from head to toe. To cleanse a room or house, carry in the lit smudge stick, clockwise around the area, making sure to smudge in the corners, behind doors, and the doorway itself.
Journeys of Life offers many different kinds of smudge sticks, loose sage, prayer feathers and abalone shells for your smudging rituals, as well as several books that elaborate on smudging ceremonies. It is never too late to clean and freshen yourself and your space by holding a smudging ritual. There is no wrong way to smudge. As long as you hold a positive intention the universe will know and guide your actions.

A special "Thank You" to everyone who contributed to our collection to buy phone cards for the troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.
We collected over $100 and Journeys will match that amount. With the suggestion of Staff Sgt. Edward Greiner we will send the money to the local Yellow Ribbon Ladies group. They send a little piece of home to the troops overseas via regular care packages. Again thanks to everyone who contributed! |

If you haven't been in & signed up, remember, there is no fee to join and no time limit to earn your certificates. Its easy! All it takes is your name and email. Credit Cards are not Priceless! Credit card companies charge stores a percentage of every purchase made with a credit or debit card. Fees continue to increase and it can be difficult for a small business to absorb these costs. So on behalf of small, local businesses everywhere, I'm asking you to please pay with cash or check whenever you can. We will always gladly accept your credit or debit card, but if you are able to make purchases with cash or checks, especially when they are less than $10, we would so appreciate it. Thanks in advance for helping Journeys of Life keep our prices reasonable.
